True Imagination

Located in not so the outskirt of the city, ‘Parivarthana’, a home of rehabilitation for the street children and the rag pickers was looked calm and serene. Called on by Mr. R.K. Vakkalanka, the secretary of the home, I have visited it in the last summer.  In fact, he asked me to see their drawings and to give suggestions for their improvement.

Afternoon at about 4 p.m. when I went there, the children have warmly greeted me after knowing by the home’s caretaker that I came to talk to them.

I made clear to them that I have not come as a teacher as I was introduced so. They have relaxed themselves with sighs of relief on hearing my words.

They brought their pieces of art when I asked them. A variety of pictures, of scenic beauty, of gods, of cartoon strips, and of other miscellany was in their hands.  Seeing them one by one, I commented on their performances, constructively giving suggestions on their line, the way the colour is applied and the dexterity shown by them. All of them drew some pictures by mere copying.

A boy of about 10 years attracted my attention with his painting of a different comic character. I inquisitively posed many questions eliciting his interests. He said that he enjoys watching cartoon pictures and that the eerie shapes and characters therein fascinate him. He added, “I like poke man and spider man and I draw inspiration from them for my imagination.” Surprised by his positive assertion, I asked him to draw some more characters, which fascinate him.

Immediately, he opened his drawing book. Held a ballpoint pen in his hand and started drawing lines of different shapes.

Inerasable, nondescript and indiscriminate lines drawn are going discursive one after another!

No rubbing, no striking off and no corrections made!

Moreover, no dilly-dallying

Very interesting, the lines on adjoining are becoming wonderful creatures one after another! I was watching spellbound.

Attention undistracted

Concentration unadulterated

I wondered how it became possible in a tender age of mischief and monkey business.

Just in half an hour, he quickly drew above one hundred characters!

He may be a Walt Disney or a Jim Davis of future times! I discovered.

I understood that if the children spend their leisure in doing a job of their own choice and interest, their concentration would ameliorate. They habituate gradually to sit and pursue on their work for a considerably long periods.  This habit in turn, adeptly channelises their studies. Their instigated ability of creativity makes their future living creative and fruitful.

The elders do not understand this. They cry and bully at the lines and drawings of their children as mad.

I asked him to draw the Mickey Mouse and the Garfield together, thinking that how would he harmonise the instinctive enmity between them.

Within ten minutes, while I was watching some other’s pictures, he completed the task and showed it to me. The Mickey and the Garfield were striding befriended, Gar holding the hand of the Mickey!

To my astonishment, he made Gar wear the large shoes of the Mickey!

I heard the secret whispers of the Gar, “Thank god, I won’t scold Mr. Davis anymore for not giving me the mickey shoes!”
