The DC Online Universe
I’ve been playing a lot of different mmo’s for a few years now, from Star Wars galaxies to WOW, and recently I picked up DCUO (DC Universe Online) so I thought I would share some of my thoughts on it. So far I’ve only made heroes so I can only talk from a heroes point of view.
First I would just like to say that I think the DCUO cinematic is pretty amazing and superman looks fairly bad ass. Now let’s get to the game itself.
Let’s start with creating a character, I personally think the character creation on DCUO is very well done, I had a little trouble to start with getting the different colours just right (mainly the skin colour) but once I had that sorted out I thought the rest was fairly straight forward. There are many different costume options and I love the added touch of being able create from scratch or pick a template another hero (one of the mentors).
Once you have created your character and selected their power group and finally a name (I was surprised at the names still available when I created my heroes) you move into your first area. I won’t give away what the area is but it’s not a very challenging area and is set up for you to learn to use your character, so don’t worry you’re not just thrown straight in at the deep end. In the starter zone you will learn most things you need to enable you to survive in the main game world, But anything you don’t learn from this training area you will pick up as you play through the first ten levels or so.
Once I was in the main world I realised that levelling was fairly quick compared to some mmo’s, the quests are Mostly kill and collect but they are different enough that they don’t get boring, and one of the main things I like is that you don’t need to keep going back to the quest giver to pick up each new part of a quest chain, once you complete part of the chain you just open your quest log complete the quest your on and the next part pops up, it saves a lot of time. I’ve also noticed that at the end of most quest chains is an instance where you ultimately fight a famous DC villain, so far I’ve fought the likes of Bane, Harley Quinn, Sinestro, Poison ivy etc.
A really good feature of DCUO is the wanted quests, you pick these up in the different safe houses and they send you after a powerful opponent. These Opponents are out in the world not in instances and you will need a group to take them down, when I was level 23 I still needed help to beat Bizarro who is level around level 13.
Now DCUO may not have the amount of content as say WOW but hopefully they will keep expanding the World and More content and instances will follow. Saying that it does have in my opinion a good pvp system (when you can get in, wait times are fairly long) and I love the legends pvp. The legends pvp is when you take on the identity of a DC hero or villain and do some pvping.
There is a lot more in this game than what I’ve described this is just a brief insight to what I have found. Overall I am loving DCUO and I can’t see myself getting bored with it any time soon.
