THE RISE OF Dark Horse Comics   by Virgil Storyteller

Over twenty years ago, Mike Richardson formed dark horse comics in Milwaukie, Oregon as an offshoot of a comic retail store chain called “Things From Another World”. Six years prior, in 1980, Richardson had opened a Comic Book store called Pegasus Books and had planned on writing and illustrating books of his own to sell, but business picked up and he never completed them. He went on to open other stores, but then business dropped, and thus dark horse comics was born.

Launching the fledgling publishing company in 1986 with two titles, Dark Horse Presents and Boris the Bear, Richardson’s dark horse comics soon after grew to success with Paul Chadwick’s Concrete, which went on to be nominated twenty-six times for awards. Within the first year of publication, dark horse comics added nine more titles to the fray including Black Cross, Trekker and The Mark.

In 1988, dark horse comics branched out to licensed properties, first with Aliens, followed by Predator, and then Star Wars in 1990, which cemented dark horse comics as the publisher for movie-based comics. That same year, dark horse comics made a bold move by teaming up their first two popular movie properties in Aliens vs. Predator, which of course became famous and spawned two films based on the idea.

Success continued for dark horse comics, the new standard of independent comics, with works by the likes of Frank Miller (Sin City, Dark Knight Returns), Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) and Mike Mignola (Hellboy). In 1992, dark horse entertainment, a division of dark horse comics, was formed and set up on the lot of Twentieth Century Fox thanks to a first look deal with the studio. The division became a hit as two of its properties, The Mask and Timecop, both created by Richardson, became big film successes starring Jim Carrey and Jean-Claude Van Damme respectively.

Joining the revolution, dark horse comics evolved into the internet age launching darkhorse.com in 1995. The website features animations, trailers, award winning design and content, and also serves as the online retail store for Things From Another World.

Today, dark horse comics has become one of the top four American Comic Book Publishers third only to Marvel and DC, and neck-and-neck with Image. Dark horse comics boasts many popular properties, many of which have gone onto film like Sin City, Hellboy, and Pathfinder. Dark horse comics publishes around 30 books per month, sells in over 50 countries, and presents online content on MySpace.com.
